Workshop: Body Image

Question Box Question(s):
  1. What age do you stop getting your period? A: People typically stop getting a period between 45 and 55 years of age when they enter menopause. This can be earlier or later for some. Pregnant persons will also not experience a period.
  2. How do you insert a tampon or diva cup? A: There is always a leaflet that comes inside a new box of tampons that has diagrams and instructions so don't feel you have to be an expert. There are two kinds of tampons, one with an applicator and one without. Whichever is right for you will depend on your preferences and priorities. Please be aware that the linked sites in this question are all for particular brands but there is a HUGE variety available and we are not endorsing these brand names. For plastic free options, http://www.natracare.com/ is found in most local grocery stores.
  3. What if every size of condom is too big? (very small penis) Condoms come in so many sizes but they aren't always easy to find or decipher the wording on the package. Look for packages that use phrases including words like 'snug fit,' 'thin,' or 'bare feel.' Just like shoes, you may have to try several different condoms before you find the right fit. This is normal! Often there is a bigger variety of options online than in drugstores and some companies provide measurement charts. Another great option is the internal condom which is inserted into the vagina or anus and accommodates any size penis.
  4. What is bloating? It has a lot to do with increased uterine contractions and a little to do with water retention. During menstruation, the uterus speeds up it's rate of contractions. This increased level of uterine contractions cause the bowels to move more slowly meaning food moves more slowly through the digestive tract.This leads to the swollen feeling many people experience while on their periods and can also be linked to a feeling of constipation. There may be other contributing factors to the cause of bloating, like water retention. This is linked to changes in levels of the sex hormones progesterone and oestrogen. About a week before a person's period starts, levels of the hormone progesterone fall. Changes in progesterone and oestrogen levels cause the body to retain more water and salt. The body's cells become swollen with water, causing the feeling of bloating.
What did we talk about? We identified and attempted to define positive and negative body image. We discovered that positive body image is linked to healthier decisions around safe-sex and self-advocacy.

We didn't share any resources for this workshop. Next week's workshop is "Disability and Sex." We're looking forward to seeing you there!
